Occasionally, certain recessive traits such as blue carapace color or pots will appear on the American Lobster. Although lobster only turn red when the carotin pigment on their skin is heated, it is often believed that their vibrant color is a reason for their success in the commercial fishing industry.
The genetic make up of lobsters is often quite similar, as studies show, eight different surveyed lobster populations had a bit over 20% hetero zygotes and those from different populations were genetically, quite similar. Because of this genetic similarity, lobsters haven't evolved much since the cambrian explosion; in fact, they've kept most of their uniquely arthropod traits.
